An Electrophoretic Study on the Protein of the Nasal and Paranasal Sinus Secretion

Abstract
It is said that nasal secretions have small amounts of protein. This protein is composed of albumin, immunoglobulin, lysozyme, protease and protease inhibitor.
Several authors reported about electrophoretic patterns of protein of the nasal and paranasal sinus secyetion but there were many differences in its patterns.
Shigeru (1979) reported that there were albumin, a,, az, p and T globulin. However, other authors, suoh as Azma (1979) and Mogi & Watanabe (1978) reported that electrophoretic pattern of the nasal and paranasal secretion were similar to that of surum and there were some cases which did not contain all 5 fractions. Moro (1973) reported that protein fractions (haptoglobulin, transferin) increase in the advanced inflammatory groups in chronic paranasal sinusitis.
In order to confirm Whether the nasal secretion has the same fractions as that of serum, to count the frequencies of the presentation of each fractions and to see their changes in the inflammatory process, authors collected 22 nasal secretions from acute rhinitis 9 cases, chronic rhinitis 6 cases, chronic paranasal sinusitis 7 cases and collected 16 maxillary sinus secretions from acute paranasal sinusitis 5 cases, chronic paranasal sinusitis 11 cases, by use of puncture method.
The samples were diluted with small amount of o.2M EDTA (ethyl diamine tetra acetic acid) solution and,,electrophoresis was done by use of Zip Zone electrophoresis kit (U. S. A., Helena Co. ), PH 8. 6, H-R Buffer, 180V. 15 Minutes.
Following results were ensued.
1. Nasal secretions had 5 protein fractions such as albumin, a,, ax, A and T globulin. Albumin and T globulin fractions were always presented but the fractions of a,, a2, i9 globulin frequently disappeared in the. mucous secretion, 15 cases of acute rhinitis and chronic rhinitis,
2. The mucopurulent secretions of the maxillary sinus 16 cases had 4 fractions such as albumin, a2 globulin,
A globulin, and r globulin in acute and chronic sinusitis and aiglobulin was not found.
3. When the finding of Caldwell-Luc operation was mucosal thickening and polypoid, and severe thologic
finding in Waters¢¥ view were seen, a, globulin was not found and as globulin and p globulin increased,in
the frequency of presentation in nasal and paranasal sinus secretion.
4. The nasal and paranasal sinus secretion had frequently 5 fractions of protein electrophoresis. There patterns were similar to that of serum. Albumin and 1¢¥ globulin were always presented but the frequencies or the presentation of the other fraction were changed in the inflammatory process.
